Kenny Lattimore & Chanté Moore has two of the purest voices in music today, and I recalled when they first made their entries into the music scene, bringing their distinct brands of R&B music to the forefront before they were a married couple. As their careers began to soar, so has their love for God, relationship and family. Enjoy as I speak to them about the Gospel half of their new CD release, “Uncovered/Covered”.
Hi Guys, it great to see that you are back with an added dimension to your career: doing a totally gospel CD. What was that experience like, and what inspired the gospel half of the project?
Kenny: Well for one, we are Christians and we have always done gospel music, but the idea to do gospel on this particular album came from Max Siegel. It wasn’t something that we sought after, but have always done gospel on our solo albums. This album is an expression of totally who we are as people, is totally about the human experience so it was interesting merging the two, still having the R&B side because people know us from our R&B projects and at the same time having the gospel album which is a reflection of our spiritual lives, and people get to see us for who we really are. It really is about all sides of love for us.
How did the title “Uncovered/Covered” come about?
Kenny: “Uncovered” is the name of the R&B project which preceded the gospel project by a year. We had gone in to do the “Uncovered” project and pretty much finished it. Different delays occurred that allowed us to go back in and to the single, “Figure It Out” which was the last song we recorded at the top of this year. In that process it allowed the “Covered” project to be birthed which was the gospel idea, so when Max Siegel came to talk about doing the gospel CD, we thought that “Covered” would be a nice thing to say as we’re covered spiritually, we covered in prayer and by the blood of Jesus, so there was still a spiritual connection with that particular word without us renaming the entire project.
You’ve worked extensively with Fred Hammond on the gospel side of the project…what was it like working with him?
Chanté: It was really great and we enjoyed ourselves because he is very intelligent and extremely talented. Just getting to work with him was a dream come true for both of us. He’s also goofy…we had lots of laughs and we played and prayed. We had just a spiritually, uplifting fun time! Just being able to do what we do; and I know that we can give credit to Max Siegel for calling and asking us to do this album, but truly it came from the Lord, it really wasn’t Max Siegel. He was being used by God but certainly wasn’t Max. It really was ordained by God that this happen at this time in our lives…just the way that it happened is undeniably the Lord. I also love it that there are both sides to the album, because we have a lot to say about love, relationships and all of that, so we are happy and honored to be able to share our love for the Lord at the same time.
Is this a sign of more gospel albums in the future, or going totally gospel?
Chanté: We still will be doing R&B because we have things to say about love, and there’s much more to who we are than just to simply say, “I’m going to cut off that part of which I am”. Even in the midst of our live concerts we definitely would give honor to the Lord because we would not be doing any of this without Him. It is really an extension of what we do. We will not cut it off unless the Lord says cut it off.
I know you are Christians and sometimes we may have different views of what Christianity means to us. In your own words, please tell me what does Christianity and faith mean to you?
Kenny: I think it’s about following Christ and trying to reflect His image and be who He has called us to be. To be Christ-like is to be Christian; it’s about knowing Him, knowing His purpose in our lives and understanding how He wants us to walk and what He wants us to do…All these things.
Chanté: And having a personal relationship with Him, an intimate and personal relationship with God and not just thinking of Him as this distant person who created us. He is who we allow to be into our lives and certainly he proves himself to be who He is. He said, “if you draw nigh to me, I’ll draw nigh unto you” He wants us to love Him like we love our boyfriends or girlfriends and the people close to us, so it’s about a personal relationship with Him.
As a married couple, what words of advice can you offer to any married couple out there who may have a great relationship or a shaky relationship?
Chanté: What I will say first is…know who you are and be a complete person before you even try to seek out someone else. A lot of times, especially as women are very emotional about relationships, and we want someone to come along and make us happy. I’d say find your happiness and your joy. Be complete, and if you are complete, you will then draw that person who is like you with the same kind of foundation as yourself. Be selective and once you have figured out all those things about yourself, it becomes easy for you to look at someone else and say that is who I am, or that’s not like me and that will not work in my life. We are to be able to discriminate between one choice or another. Sometimes we act like there are not enough choices out there, so we take whatever comes along. We don’t wait long enough to find the one that God has for us. I will also say, be patient. You attract people after you figure out who you really are. You have the right to say no if they ask to marry you. The choice is yours.
I listened to the project in its entirety, and the song that really touches me to the core is the song, “No Limit.” It is a Beautiful song.
Kenny: It’s amazing…you never know what song is going to touch someone. Chanté said in a previous interview that this project is for who it’s for. There are those people who will get very controversial about having the two music forms, mixing Gospel with secular, this isn’t good enough or that it doesn’t have enough “Jesus” in it. We go through all of these emotions about our creative expressions. It’s amazing that you are confirming that music is something you just pour out and give, and you never know what people is going to be moved by. After that God is completely in control of how he allows it to affect people’s lives.
Finally guys, you will be touring with Mary Mary and Take 6. Please tell me a little about that.
